The Otter field is located on Block 210/15a, license P.226 about 150 kilometres northeast of Shetland, in a water depth of 182 metres in the UK sector of the North Sea. Serving as operator of the licenses is TAQA Britania, holding an 81% interest; Dana Petroleum holds the remaining interest. Discovered in 1977, and receiving governmental approval for field development in July 2001, Otter is a satellite oil and gas field that added new reserves while extending the field life of the Eider field.

Otter was developed by six wells (oil producers and water injectors) tied-back to the Eider platform by a 13-mile-long (21-kilometer-long), 10-inch production flowline. The flowline is considered to be one of the longest subsea tiebacks installed in the North Sea. Commencing production on October 13, 2002, Otter exports its oil to the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal in Shetland via the Brent system while gas is exported to the St. Fergus Gas Terminal via the Shell-operated FLAGS system.
