Gazprom acquired subsoil rights to the Tambey field cluster - comprising the North-Tambeyskoye, West-Tambeyskoye, Malyginskoye and Tasiyskoye deposits - in 2008, after paying the state 10.4 billion rubles. The licences are valid until January 2028. As of May 2017, Gazprom had carried out 2,650 square km of 3D seismic surveys and had completed 14 exploration wells at the Tambey fields.
Gazprom is interested in the Tambey resources to offset a projected decline in mature fields in Yamalo-Nenets that serve the European gas market. Novatek, which expressed interest in joint development of the assets several times between 2015 and 2017, wants to use the gas reserves to expand its LNG export capacity in the region.
