Project Profile
Value: US$419 million
Location: Marsaxlokk, Malta
CCGT capacity: 200MW
FSU capacity: 125,000m³
Start-up Year: 2016
The Malta LNG Power Project is located in Marsaxlokk, Malta. The LNG-to-power project in Malta involves the construction of a 200MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT), as well as receiving, storage and regasification facilities for liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) approved the €370m (US$419m) project in March 2014. Malta Power & Gas Limited (MPGL) is the owner and operator of the project.
Natural gas is supplied through the regasification unit, which receives LNG from a floating storage unit (FSU) moored to a jetty. The regasification facility is located on the southern tip of DPS, while the jetty is situated to the south-west of the same facility. The FSU provided by SOCAR Trading on a lease for 18 years is docked in Delimara, Malta, and is estimated to have a capacity of 125,000m³. Regasified LNG from the regasification plant is supplied to the CCGT plant and to Enemalta\'s existing 149MW power plant at DPS. The project has an 18-year gas sales period and supply power to Enemalta as part of a power purchase agreement. The power plant and LNG facilities are expected to share the existing infrastructure at DPS.
