Project Profile
Value: US$50-150 million (estimate)
Location: 73 km north-west of Shetland, UK
Water depth: 249 m
Exploration start-up: 2017
Craster is located in Block 205/15 about 73 kilometres north-west of Shetland. To establish whether commercially viable quantities of hydrocarbons are present at the Craster prospect, two well locations / options have been considered; Craster and Budle, however only one of the well options will be drilled. The Craster well is located in a water depth of 249 metres and will be drilled using a semisubmersible mobile drilling unit. The drilling programme is expected to commence in May 2017 and will last approximately 168 days. The well will comprise five sections, 42”, 26”, 17.5”, 12.25” and 8.5”. The 42” and 26” sections will be drilled using seawater and bentonite sweeps with cuttings discharged at the drill site. The 17.5”, 12.25” and 8.5” sections will be drilled using Low Toxicity Oil Based Mud and cuttings will either be treated by thermo-mechanical cuttings cleaning system prior to offshore discharge or skipped and shipped to shore for treatment and disposal.
In the event that potentially commercial quantities of hydrocarbons are found, well testing may be undertaken. In addition a vertical seismic profile may be undertaken. Following completion of drilling operations and subject to the necessary consent from the Oil and Gas Authority, the well will be plugged and abandoned in accordance with Oil and Gas UK Guidelines. All activities will be covered by an Oil Pollution Emergency Plan, which will require to be approved prior to the commencement of operations.
Tenders have been received for a high-pressure, high-temperature-rated semi-submersible for the upcoming exploration work on the Craster prospect in 2017.
