Project Profile

Location: Rotterdam, Netherlands
Area: 1,400 acres
Capacity: 21 mtpa / 404,000 bbl per day
Start-up Year: 1949

The Pernis refinery started up in 1949 and is the largest integrated refinery complex in Europe and occupies a strategic location in the Rotterdam industrial region. It has a strong track record of safe and reliable operations. Pernis is a joint oil refinery/chemicals manufacturing site. At this location, Shell Nederland Chemie BV (SNC) manufactures lower olefins, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), chemical solvents, hydrocarbon solvents, brake fluids and polyols. The oil refinery is operated by Shell Nederland Raffinaderij BV. The materials made at Pernis are used by customers to manufacture many everyday products including car parts, foam seating and bedding, paints, cooling fluids, pharmaceuticals and petrol.

Royal Dutch Shell commissioned an aromatics unit and started construction on another one. Benzene from the unit will be transported via pipeline 35 km away to Shell’s Moerdijk chemical plant between the major ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, Belgium, where it will serve as feedstock for production of styrene monomer. The official construction of a solvent deasphalting (SDA) has also started scheduled for completion some time in 2018. (September, 2016)
