Project Profile

Value: US$1 billion
Location: 240km east of Aberdeen, Scotland, Central North Sea
Area: 35km
Reserves: 490 MMbbls of oil, 35 MMbbls of natural gas condensate and 56.6 mcm of natural gas
Start-up Year: July 1998

The Eastern Trough Area Project (ETAP) is an integrated development of nine different reservoirs sharing a central processing facility (CPF). Six separate fields are operated by BP: Marnock, Mungo, Monan, Machar, Mirren and Madoes (the M fields); and three by Shell: Heron, Egret and Skua fields (the Heron cluster). All fields are geographically located within a 35km area. The various fields are grouped into six areas called clusters. BP operates on a day-to-day basis, while Shell remains responsible for any drilling, reservoir intervention or non-routine maintenance.

Each field is not commercially viable for standalone developments because of their small scale. Their combined reserves are estimated to be around 490 million barrels of oil, 35 million barrels of natural gas condensate and around 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The ETAP project began production in July 1998 with seven reservoirs. The additional two reservoirs - Mirren and Madoes - started production in 2002. In August 2015 the project received a US$ 975m investment by BP. The funding is expected to extend the life ETAP by 15 years, through to 2030.
