Project Profile

Investment: US$ 537.45 million
Location: Finland, Europe
Capacity: 50,000 bbl/d
Start-up Year: 1957

The Naantali Refinery is located in Finland, Europe and came on stream in 1957. The main output at the refinery is: traffic fuels and specialty products, such as bitumen, solvents, and small engine gasoline. The Naantali Refinary has a higher refining margin than that of comparable-sized refineries, thanks to its focus on specialty products. It has the refining capacity of over 50,000 bbl/d and produces some 3 million tons of petroleum products a year. The refinery also has over 1 million m3 of crude and product storage capacity and it runs on medium, sweet Russian crude oil.

In 2014, Neste Oil announced plans to invest US$ 537.45 million in a program designed to integrate operations at Naantali with those of its 9.8 million-tpy Porvoo refinery as a means to keep the company’s European operations competitive. While the consolidation efforts will result in the shutdown of some existing units at Naantali, the refinery will continue to produce diesel and specialty products, including solvents, and maintain an important role in producing feedstocks, such as vacuum gas oil, for the Porvoo refinery. If approved, optimization projects at the Naantali refinery would be completed in early 2017. Neste Oil is the operator of the project with 100% interest.

Operators:

Neste Oil: 100% interest

Contractors:

Neste Jacobs: EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management) services in Naantali to improve the competitiveness of the refining operations. Neste Jacobs has earlier performed Basic Engineering for the project. Neste will simplify the refinery structure in Naantali and improve the process efficiency, which will lower the production costs and increase feedstock supply to Porvoo Refinery.
