Project Profile

Value: US$15-US$18 billion
Location: 340 km to north from the city of Novy Urengoy, Russia
Reserves: 470 million tonnes of oil and gas condensate and 188 billion cubic metres of gas
Area: 490 sq. km
Start-up year: 2016

The Messoyakha project includes East Messoyakha and West Messoyakha fields. Messoyakhaneftegaz, equally controlled by Gazprom Neft and Rosneft, possesses licenses for field’s development. Gazprom Neft acts as a project operator. Fields were discovered in 1980’s and are the most northern of known onshore oil fields of Russia. They are situated at the Gydan Peninsula, in the Tazov District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Territory, 340 km to north from the city of Novy Urengoy in arctic climatic zone with non-developed infrastructure. In October 2012 first oil from the East Messoyakha filed was produced as part of experimental-industrial work. In November 2014 construction of pressure pipeline from the Messoyakha cluster to the Zapolyarye-Purpe trunk pipeline system was started. The length of oil pipeline will total about 100 km, its peak capacity – 7 mln tons per year.

In July 2015, Rosneft and Gazprom Neft completed the project to build the first production well at the East-Messoyakha deposit, which is part of the Messoyakha cluster, the northernmost of the known Russian onshore oil fields. By 2016 when the field is scheduled to become fully operational, the number of wells located at the East-Messoyakha deposit is to reach 63. The intensive drilling program is expected to be implemented using a set of measures aimed at making work more efficient. During the construction, workers use up-to-date plugging materials and short-term cured concrete as well as equipment to collect geophysical data when drilling. In spring 2015, the East-Messoyakha field saw the completion of a four-year pilot project and the start of production drilling work. The industrial infrastructure for the field, which is due to be commissioned in 4Q16, has been built since 2014. The construction of a pipeline which would connect the field with the Zapolyarye-Purpe pipeline system as well as the building of a gas turbine power plant with the capacity of 84 MW, the CPF and some other facilities is still underway.
