Project Profile

Value: US$1500 million
Location: Nyhamna in Aukra, Mid-Norway
Capacity: 84 million standard cubic metres (after upgrade)
Start-up Year: Q4 2016

A/S Norske Shell (Shell) is undertaking the Gas Plant Upgrade project at Nyhamna, Møre Basin in the southern part of the Norwegian Sea, Norway. The project is valued at US$1500 million (estimated) with project start date Q1 2014 and the project completion date at Q4 2016. The project is located at Nyhamna in Aukra, Mid-Norway. Pressure in the Ormen Lange Reservoir is declining. In order to maintain the export volumes, Booster Compression is required. The Nyhamna Plant and Ormen Lange field shall be upgraded with increased pressure of Ormen Lange and a new pipeline, Polarled, shall be led into Nyhamna from the Aasta Hansteen field. AF execute all civil works at Nyhamna for Kværner Stord AS on behalf of AS Norske Shell. The purpose of the Nyhamna Expansion Project is that the Nyhamna plant should be able to receive gas from other fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. In addition, first phase of compression of the Ormen Lange field will be executed by installing dual compressors on the Nyhamna plant. The Nyhamna plant was originally built with a processing capacity of 70 million standard cubic metres of gas per day. After Nyhamna Expansion Project, the capacity of the plant will be 84 million standard cubic metres and thereby correspond to the dimensioned volumes of the Langeled pipeline. The project involves the upgrade of a Nyhamna gas processing plant. It will include the upgrade of compressors, a boiler, construction of processing unit, hydrogen sulfide removal unit, storage tanks, installation of safety systems and construction of other related infrastructural facilities. The project organisation will be located at several places. Engineering and project management activities will be conducted by Kvaerner at Stord and engineering and modification work will be delivered by Aker Solutions\' offices in Oslo, Kristiansund and Tromsø. In addition, a large number of suppliers from Mid Norway will be involved in various project activities. Once fully mobilized, at least 500 employees are expected to be working in rotation on site at Nyhamna. In addition, more than 200 engineers and management will be working on the contract throughout the period. Of these, around 80 will, be working out of Tromsø.

The FEED work took place integrated with Shell in their offices in Aberdeen and run until engineering starts at the end of 2012. Meanwhile, a site team will be mobilized to begin some minor modification work at Nyhamna. Kvaerner ASA used Aker Solutions as a sub-contractor for the company\'s work for A/S Norske Shell to deliver engineering, procurement, construction and management (EPCM) for modifications and projects at the Ormen Lange/Nyhamna onshore facilities on the west coast of Norway. Aker Solutions delivered engineering and modification work from the company\'s offices in Oslo, Kristiansund and Tromsø. Kvaerner has received a letter of award from A/S Norske Shell for Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management (EPCM) for modifications and projects at the Ormen Lange/Nyhamna onshore facilities on the west coast of Norway. The contract is a framework agreement with duration of six years, and options for additional two plus two years. This is not the first time Kvaerner will be present at Nyhamna. In 2003 and 2004 the company was awarded three large contracts for the initial construction of the gas plant. Around 11 000 people were involved in the projects that lasted from 2005 to 2007. The projects were completed on 30 November 2007, with good HSE results and satisfied clients. AF execute the Civil works for Nyhamna Expansion Project for Kvaerner on behalf of AS Norske Shell. The scope of the work encompasses ground work, piping and cable culverts, roads and parking lots, several isolated buildings, foundations for mechanical units and modules, pipe racks for gas pipe packages, various finishing work and landscaping. All work shall be performed on Nyhamna Plant in the period from July 2013 to July 2017. The majority of the works shall be completed by end 2015.
