Project Profile
Value: US$2 billion
Location: Yorkshire, Humberside, UK
Capacity: 200 million tonnes of CO2 from a carbon capture scheme
Start-up Year: 2018
The network would become part of a regional carbon capture and storage network, connecting a number of fixed point sources, such as large power stations, to suitable storage sites, such as saline aquifers or depleted gas fields. Given that a large percentage of the UK’s electricity supply is generated within the region a capture and storage network could provide the potential to reduce the UK’s CO2 emissions to atmosphere by 60M tonnes per year. Plans include a 16km onshore cross-country pipeline and a 90km subsea offshore pipeline.
AMEC was awarded a contract to prepare a study to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of creating a distributed CO2 network within the Yorkshire and Humber regionThe contract was awarded by the local regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, and financial support is being provided by BP, ConocoPhillips, Drax Power, E.ON, Powerfuels, Scottish & Southern and Shell.
Jee completed a conceptual design study on the feasibility of the CCS pipeline. National Grid was keen to utilise Jee\'s extensive subsea engineering experience, and will use the study to inform key decisions as the project progresses. Areas covered by the study included: identification and evaluation of proposed locations; pipeline protection; corrosion; stability requirements; umbilical cross section design, and overall cost modelling.
Wood Group Kenny was appointed by National Grid to study the process of transporting and injecting carbon dioxide into a prospective offshore saline aquifer, located in the UK sector of the Southern North Sea. Wood Group Kenny will work together with its sister company Wood Group Mustang to complete the design work as a combined project team.
