Turkey and China signed a deal for the construction of Turkey\'s largest underground natural gas storage facility under Tuz Gölü (Lake Tuz). Turkey opened a tender for the construction of the Tuz Gölü facility three years ago. The tender attracted American, Austrian, Chinese, Russian and Italian firms, along with leading Turkish conglomerates of the time with the Chinese finally claiming the project. The project includes also:

Water supply pipeline
- 120 km, with 3 pump stations, 5 reservoirs

- from Hirfanli Dam reservoir

- glass reinforced plastic

12 Caverns
- at the depth of 1100-1400 m
- physical volume of app. 630.000 m3
- total working gas volume app. 1 billion m3

The gas storage facility will be in an underground salt formation located close to Tuz Golu, a salt lake in South Central Turkey. The facility, upon completion, will have a storage capacity of about 960 million cubic metres of working gas and 460 million cubic metres of cushion gas. BOTAS is the owner and operator of the project with 100% interest while the whole project is being financed by Boru Hatları İle Petrol Taşıma A.Ş. (BOTAS). The project design changed to 2 phases of 480 mcm each, and the first phase is expected to be completed in 2016.The indicators had end-dates of June 2011, per the original results framework in the PAD/supplemental letter. The total project capital cost is estimated at US$538 million.
