The Knockinnon field is located on Block 11/24 (Licence P1270), about 5 miles from the coastline and approximately 9 miles northwest of the Beatrice field, in UK North Sea. It was discovered in April 2000 by well 11/24a-2, which encountered hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir sands in the Middle Jurassic Beatrice Formation and also in the overlying Volgian and Brora Sands. Oil was encountered in the Beatrice A and B Sands in both the 11/24a-2 and -2z wells, the principal reservoir being the Beatrice Lower A Sand. The prospectivity of the Knockinnon discovery was enhanced by a 3D seismic survey acquired by Caithness Oil in 2007. However, no oil-water contact was encountered in the wells so there is significant upside in the range of potential volumes.
By 2014, the operators, iGas, had relinquished the section of P 1270 which contained the Knockinnon prospect, carving out instead a smaller portion of Block 11/24 encompassing the producing Lybster development.
Independently audited estimates assign 9.2 million barrels of proven and probable reserves to Knockinnon. In the Knockinnon prospect, according to the new agreement among Trapoil and Caithness, Trapoil will hold a 70% working interest going forwards and assume the role of operator, while Caithness will retain a 30% interest in the field.
