Project Profile
Location: Licence P15a in the South of the Dutch North Sea, Netherlands
Production: 2,500 bpd (peak)
Water Depth: 2,000 m
Start-up Year: 2013
Rijn is an oil field located in Licence P15a in the South of the Dutch North Sea, 40 km (25 mi) off the coast of Rotterdam. It was discovered by Amoco in April 1982 with the P15-3 well, which tested oil from two reservoirs in the Lower Cretaceous at a combined rate of 2,500 bpd. The main reservoir is the Vlieland sandstone which lies at a shallow depth of around 2,000 metres. The field was developed using three platforms: a process and accommodation unit and two wellhead platforms.
Production started in December 1985 and ceased from the field in 1998, after which the field was shut in. The redevelopment of the Rijn field took place in 2009 and 2010, with first phase production started up in January 2011. The first phase of the redevelopment involves the recompletion of three original production wells. A next phase of the redevelopment could involve the drilling of high-angle sidetracks from existing wells. The oil will be exported through a dedicated pipeline to Hoek van Holland.
