The Gryphon Oil Field is located 320 km northeast of Aberdeen in UK Ninth Round Block 9/18b. The field was discovered by Well 9/18b-7 in 1987 and the production started in 1993. The field lies in 112 metres depth. Kerr-McGee had drilled 13 wells and 10 sidetracks on the field. In 1990 a 3D seismic survey was acquired over the whole trend, in Blocks 9/18a, 9/18b, 9/23a and 9/23b. The field is a complex combination structural/stratigraphic trap formed on the northerly plunging nose of the Crawford Ridge. The Gryphon \'A\' Floating Production Storage and Offtake (FPSO) facility has been on location in United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS) block 9/18b since 23 September 1993, and on production since 14 October 1993. This first oil date was less than 10 months from UK government approval for the project, a record for a North Sea oil field development. Production to the FPSO is via a subsea well cluster 1 mile to the south west. Most of the producing wells will have horizontal completion intervals. Peak production of 55,000 BOPD was in 1994. Gryphon field is currently being operated by Maersk Oil, which has awarded TWMA a contract to handle and dispose of subsea structures and damaged equipment.
