Chevron, ExxonMobil, Petoro and Idemitsu plan to drill an exploration well in PL 598. The partners also planned to collect 1,100 km of 3-D seismic data, where a minimum of 400 km will be specially designed for sub-basalt imaging. The partners in PL 598 are all members of the pioneering project Force Sub-basalt, which will attempt to crack the code to be able to see through the basalt. Basalt is a term for a rock that is so hard and dense that no existing geophysical techniques and technologies can see through it.
