Project Profile

Value: US$1.93 billion
Location: PL475 BS, Block 6406/3 and 6407/1, Norwegian Continental Shelf
Recoverable reserves: 180 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe)
Water Depth: 300m
Start-up year: 2017

The Maria discovery in the Garn formation lies in a large northeast-southwest trending Jurassic horst block. The Garn Formation forms the reservoir of several producing fields and discoveries in Mid Norway, including the Trestakk, Smørbukk Sør, Tyrihans, and Tyrihans North structures, all adjacent to the Maria discovery. Production Licence 475 BS is in block 6406/3 and 6407/1 and is located between the Tyrihans Nord and Smørbukk Sør fields and next to the Trestakk discovery. It is situated about 200 km off the coast of Norway in water depth of 300 m.

Field Development

The development solution chosen for the field is a production facility on the sea bed, connected to the Kristin, Heidrun and Åsgard B production platforms.

- Kristin platform will process the Maria well stream
- Heidrun platform will supply water for reservoir injection
- Åsgard B via the Tyrihans D field will provide gas lift.

Processed oil will be shipped to the Åsgard field for storage and offloading to shuttle tankers. Gas will be exported via the Åsgard Transport System to Kårstø.

FMC Technologies’ Norwegian subsidiary FMC Kongsberg Subsea AS.: Subsea contract worth approx. NOK 1.8 billion (US$280 million)

Nexans: Supply of Direct Electrical Heating (DEH) technology. The DEH riser will connect the Kristin and Maria fields in the Norwegian Sea with the Kristin platform, ensuring the constant flow through pipelines. The delivery, worth approximately US$9 million, will replace an existing DEH riser cable from the Kristin platform. The new riser cable will connect the Kristin platform with a subsea connection box, and will contain four cores to enable the operation of one DEH line to the Kristin field and one to the Maria field.

DNV GL: US$3.95 million deal with Wintershall to carry out verification work on subsea equipment for the project.

Reinertsen: Contract to prepare Kristin platform, located in the Norwegian Sea, for tie-in with Wintershall’s Maria field. The contract is worth NOK 600 million (US$75.37 million). Maria field will be connected with the producing platform Kristin, Heidrun and Åsgard B via two templates located on the ocean floor. The installation work will take place between 2016 and 2018, with production scheduled to start in 2018.

DeepOcean: Riser installation contract from Statoil for two platforms in the Norwegian Sea that will serve as a tie-back destination for the nearby Maria development

Aibel: Contract for work related to planned water injection from the Heidrun platform to the Maria Field.

Subsea 7: Pipeline and subsea construction (PSC) contract worth approximately US$300 million. The PSC contract includes a comprehensive engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) agreement for three major pipeline systems linking the Maria development as a subsea tie-back to existing infrastructure in the Norwegian Sea. Subsea 7 will also install the subsea production system and control umbilicals procured by Wintershall Norge through its contract with FMC in October 2014.

DNV GL: (2015) Contract by Wintershall Norge AS to provide a frame agreement for global inspection services for its developments offshore Norway. The overall contract is expected to exceed NOK 10 million (approx US$1.2 million). The term of the contract is five years, with an option for two, two-year extensions and covers all Wintershall’s projects on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). DNV GL will perform inspection, test and surveillance activities on a worldwide basis as instructed by Wintershall Norge AS. The scope of services includes: review of the Inspection and Test Plan (ITP), examination of materials, products, manufacturing processes, work procedures and/or services at Wintershall’s contractor’s premises. DNV GL will also examine contractor’s procedures, documents, quality performance and compliance with governing standards and specifications. The frame agreement will be coordinated by the DNV GL Stavanger office with resources from the Inspection Division. The frame agreement is now underway and inspection and surveillance work is planned to be carried out across a number of locations including Germany, Italy, Greece, Norway and Malaysia, where subsea equipment components and structures will be manufactured. DNV GL is also the sole supplier for the combined role of Independent Verification Body (IVB) and Third Party Design Verification scope for the subsea, umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF) part of the Maria field development project.

Odfjell Drilling: Drilling cotract using the semi-submersible Deepsea Stavanger for the drilling of production wells on the Maria field in the Haltenbanken area on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The firm contract is for six wells with an expected duration of 574 days and an estimated contract value of USD 175 million. Contract commencement is estimated to 1 April 2017. The contract additionally contains a one-well option prior to the firm contract and two wells after the firm period. The estimated contract value of the optional wells is US$98 million.
