The Khartoum refinery, located 70km north of the Sudanese capital, was established as a 50-50 partnership between the Sudanese Ministry of Oil and the Chinese National Petroleum Company (CNPC). The refinery is consist of atmospheric distillation, heavy oil catalytic cracking, catalytic reforming, diesel hydrofining, aviation kerosene, gasoline-diesel mixed hydrofining and continuous reforming units in addition to the first delayed coker in the world for high-calcium acid crude. The refinery produces gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, LPG, wax oil, petroleum coke. Khartoum refinery became operational in May 2000 with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day. In August 2003 the extension project of the refinery started and completed on 30 June 2006, boosting the crude processing capacity to 5 million metric tons per annum and the daily crude run to 100,000 barrels.
