Project Profile

Potential Value: US$300 million
Location: Egersund Basin, 100km off the coast of Norway. It lies at a water depth of 93m in Blocks 9/2 and 9/5 in the south-eastern region of the North Sea
Reserves: 60 million barrels
Start-up Year: Mid-year 2019

The field was discovered by Statoil in 1986, but was abandoned in 2001. The Yme field comprises two structures - Gamma and Beta, located 12km from each other. The oil in these reservoirs was accumulated in sandstones from the Middle Jurassic era in the Sandnes Formation. The sandstones are found at a depth of approximately 3,150m and are well consolidated. The Sandnes Formation features a homogeneous tight lower arrangement and a heterogeneous upper arrangement.

In January 2016, Norwegian startup oil firm OKEA agreed to acquire Repsol\'s 60% stake in the Yme field.

Decommissioning

In 2014, Veolia group won a contract to decommission a 14,000-tonne oil platform in the Norwegian North Sea. The Talisman-operated Yme platform has been sitting unmanned in the North Sea, offshore Norway, since mid-July, 2012, when Talisman decided to evacuate the personnel due to cracks found in the platform’s legs. After the evacuation, Talisman sent a letter to the Norwegian authorities claiming there was a threat of the platform collapsing into the sea.

In August 2016 the company started decommissioning work by using the giant Pioneering Spirit vessel, the removal in a single lift of the 13,500-tonnes topside marks a new step in decommissioning of offshore oil platforms, which previously had to be taken apart piece by piece, meaning longer operations.
