Project Profile

Value: US$643 million
Location: Norwegian Continental Shelf Block 34/10, Norway
Reserves: 2.1 billion barrels (330×106 m3), and remaining recoverable reserve in 2004 is 234 million barrels (37.2×106 m3)
Production (peak): 180,000 barrels per day (29,000 m3/d) (in 2001)
Start-up Year: 2013
Water Depth: 136m

Gullfaks is an oil and gas field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea operated by Statoil. It was discovered in 1979, in block 34/10, at a water depth of 136 metres. The initial recoverable reserve is 2.1 billion barrels (330×106 m3), and the remaining recoverable reserve in 2004 is 234 million barrels (37.2×106 m3). This oil field reached peak production in 2001 at 180,000 barrels per day (29,000 m3/d). It has satellite fields Gullfaks South, Rimfaks, Skinfaks and Gullveig. The project consists of three production platforms Gullfaks A, Gullfaks B, and Gullfaks C. Gullfaks C sits 217 metres (712 ft) below the waterline. The height of the total structure measured from the sea floor is 380 metres (1,250 ft), making it taller than the Eiffel Tower. Gullfaks C produces 250,000 barrels per day (40,000 m3/d) of oil. Gullfaks C was completed in 1980. The Tordis field, which is located 11 km south east of Gullfaks C, has a subsea separation manifold installed in 2007 which is tied-back to the existing Gullfaks infrastructure.Statoil ASA ’s Gullfaks 2030 project is aimed at extending production from the Gullfaks South gas field. The development solutions include subsea compression. The Gullfaks South is a satellite to the main Gullfaks field in the northern North Sea tied back to the Gullfaks C platform by three 15km pipelines.

Gullfaks Rimfaksdalen (GRD) was scheduled for start-up on Christmas Eve in 2016, but the project has worked faster and now the field is on stream – at lower costs than planned. Recoverable reserves are approx. 80 million barrels of oil equivalent, mostly gas. (August, 2016)

Operators:

Statoil: Operator with 51% interest

Petoro AS: 30% interest

OMV: 19% interest

Contractors:

Wood Group: Concept and feasibility study

Agility Group: Provide engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning services of the Gullfaks A platform topsides

Aker Solutions: Well services and increase oil recovery as well as provide maintenance and modifications work and EPCI modification work

Aibel: Modifications on Gullfaks C platform and Gullfaks B platform

Apply Sørco: Topside modification work for Gullfaks C platform and replacement of pipelines for Tordis field

Consortium to construct and operate to two category J rigs:

Samsung Heavy Industries
KCA Deutag Drilling

Deep Casing Tools: Design and manufacture casing and completion tools

EnerMech: will provide equipment and personnel on two offshore campaigns for the Gullfaks future oil export loading system

FMC Kongsberg Subsea AS: Subsea production equipment

FMC Technologies: Subsea production systems and equipment contract

Framo Engineering: 2030 conceptual design and construction of subsea gas compression plant

Granherne: 2030 conceptual design

Grenland Group: Modification of water injection plant on Gullfaks B

Island Offshore Group: Implementation of light well intervention

KCA Deutag: Drilling upgrade projects with Aibel

Magseis: Deploy ocean-bottom seismic (OBS) cables

Nexans: EPC contract and supply the static umbilicals

Songa Offshore: Songa Dee drilling rig

Subsea 7: Installation of a gas compression system

Technip: Fabrication, installation and tie-ins of flowlines for the field as well as removal and replacement of the two oil-loading systems. In December 2014, Technip signed a lumpsum contract with Statoil ASA for the Gullfaks Rimfaksdalen (GRD) Marine Operations Pipelay and Subsea Installation project. The GRD project scope consists of a subsea tie-back to a new Wye piece on an existing pipeline close to the Gullfaks A platform. This contract covers the:
- Fabrication and installation of two sections of pipe-in-pipe, total length ~9.5 km, with a 13% chrome stainless steel production flowline,
- Installation and tie-ins of three spools and an 8.5-kilometer umbilical,
- Installation of a ~280-ton template and a 110-ton manifold.

Wood Group: 2030 conceptual design

Schlumberger (Norway): Integrated drilling services

OneSubsea: Delivery of the world\\\'s first subsea Multiphase Compressor to Statoil for the Gullfaks South field in the North Sea. The subsea multiphase compressor enables boosting of unprocessed wet gas production fluids, while eliminating the need for an upstream separation facility or an anti-surge system, making it the industry\\\'s only true wet gas compressor.

Odfjell Drilling AS: Drilling contract using the Deepsea Atlantic drilling rig to drill two production wells at Gullfaks Sør. Deepsea Atlantic is a semi-submersible drilling rig of the MODU GVA 7500 type, operated by Odfjell Drilling AS. The rig was completed in 2009, is registered in Norway and is classified by DNV GL. Deepsea Atlantic was issued with an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) by the PSA in July 2009.

Beerenberg Corp AS: Long-term contracts for insulation, scaffolding and surface treatment services. The two new contract will replace the company’s existing contracts regarding NCS services. (January 2016)

Proserv: A multi-million pound contract for the provision of production control equipment in Norway. Proserv will supply five wellhead hydraulic power units (HPUs). (April 2016)

Sub contractor:

Seaway Heavy Lifting: Deliver a wet gas compression station for Subsea 7
