Project Profile

Value: $3,800 million
Location: Berkine basin, Algeria
Production at El Merk: more than 160,000 boepd (4Q, 2016), 154,000 boepd (1Q, 2017)
Production at Hassi Berkine South (HBNS): 118,000 bpd (4Q, 2016), 105,000 boepd (1Q, 2017)
Start-up year: El Merk - 2013 and HBNS -1998

The development will serve as a major wet gas processing programme to recover oil from four fields in the Berkine basin, near the borders with Libya and Tunisia. The fields are: Block 208 and Hassi Berkine South (HBNS), both operated by Anadarko and Sonatrach; Block 212, operated by Sonatrach and Eni; and the El-Merk field, which straddles Block 208 and Block 405a, operated by Sonatrach and Burlington Resources.

Anadarko’s acreage is estimated to contain at least 100 million barrels of oil. Substantial additional reserves will be processed from across the basin. The gas from the fields is expected to be used for re-injection. The development of these fields is expected to require more than 100 wells and the construction of oil and condensate production facilities. The hub will have a capacity of 130,000 bpd of oil and condensates across two 65,000 b/d trains, and 600 million cubic feet a day of natural gas liquids.

The El Merk development will include a central processing facility, export pipelines and field infrastructure. The scheme has been divided into several packages, including an export pipeline, offsite facilities, project management assistance, industrial base and modifications to facilities on block 404 in the Hassi Berkine field. A pipeline network will transport crude to Houd El Hamra and LPG and condensate to Gassi Touil.
