Project Profile

Value: Undisclosed
Location: Brunei Darussalam, Southeast Asia
Reserves: 31 million m3 oil, 3.7 million m3 of condensate and 56 109 m3 gas
Area: 14 by 16 km
Start-up Year: 1984

The Fairley field is located some 45 km northwest of Seria, in water depths of about 60 metres. The field consists of 4 separate accumulations spread over an area of 14 by 16 km. Fairley has 29 oil and 22 gas wells. Fairley-1 discovered gas in the Block 1 structure in early 1969. By mid-1971, the other three widely separated accumulations comprising the field had all been discovered oil-bearing, FA-2 in block 2, FA-4 in Block 4 and FA-5 in Block 20. Full scale development commenced in 1972 with drilling from a platform (FADP-1) situated in Block 2 and continued into 1982; with the installation of a fifth drilling platform on the gas-bearing Fairley Block 1.

To date (1/1/96), 63 wells have been drilled in the field, of which 34 are producing. The field has some 210 reservoir units. The oil is light and waxy with an average density of about 40 API (875 kg/m3). Average production rates during 1995 from the four developed blocks were 1,320 m3/d liquids (1,110 m3/d of oil and 210 m3/d of condensate) and 3.1 million m3/d gas. The ultimate recovery for the field is estimated at 31 million m3 oil (36% recovery), 3.7 million m3 of condensate (46% recovery) and 56 109 m3 gas (80% recovery).

The reservoir drive mechanism varies from a relatively strong water drive in the open flanked Blocks 1 and 20 (where oil recovery factors of up to 50% are common), moderate in Block 2 to a weak water drive in the fault-bounded Block-4 (where recovery is only about 20%).

Geology

In Block 1 and 2 hydrocarbons are found in the A to B sands from 1,450 to 3,100 metres subsea (Early Piacenzian). Blocks 3, 4 and 5 contain hydrocarbons in the B to C sands from 1,680 to 2,770 metres subsea (Late Zanclian to Early Piacenzian) and Block 20 in the P to S sands between 2,360 to 3,050 metres subsea (Zanclian).

Cores from the A, B and C sands are interpreted as fine to very fine, beach, shallow offshore bar and channel sands, ranging from 3 to 40 metres thick, with porosities and permeabilities of 17 to 26% and 10 to 500 mDarcy (0.01-0.5m2) respectively. The reservoirs range in age from Late Miocene in the southern accumulations to Late Pliocene in the northern, reflecting the seaward progradation of the palaeo-Baram coastline.

Currently, the field is being serviced by 4 outlying production platforms for oil stabilization and one manned complex, Fairley-4, for gas processing and compression. Current daily production from this field averages 18,000 barrel per day oil and 3-4 million sm3/d gas.
