The East Ambalat block is located 80 kilometres east of Tarakan in water depths of 2,000 metres in the Ambalat Sea, North Kalimantan in border areas between Indonesia and Malaysia. Ambalat is a sea block in the Celebes Sea located off the east coast of Borneo. It lies to the east of the Indonesian province of North Kalimantan and to the south-east of the Malaysian state of Sabah, and it is the subject of a territorial dispute between the two nations. Malaysia refers to part of the Ambalat block as Block ND6 (formerly Block Y) and part of East Ambalat Block as Block ND7 (formerly Block Z). 
In May 2016, the Indonesian government has transferred contract for East Ambalat's oil and gas block, previously held by Chevron, to Pertamina. PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) Ambalat East, a subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero) officially gets management oil and gas block in East Ambalat block. PT PHE East Ambalat will act as operator with a 100% participating interest in the block. Production Sharing Contract (PSC) block East Ambalat will be valid for 30 years with a firm commitment in the first three years of US$8.5 million.
