Project Profile
Value: $500 Million
Proven reserves: 20 bcf
Mkuranga holds about 20 bcf proven gas reserves with upside of about 180 bcf in two nearby structures.
PetroQuest drilled three wells between 2006 and 2008, Mkuranga-1, Mbezi-1 and Minangu-1, within the Bigwa region of coastal Tanzania just south of Dar es Salaam in a geological area known as the Bigwa Embayment. The Mkuranga-1 (MKA-1) well drilled to a total depth of 3,622m within the Lower Cretaceous sandstones. Another seismic survey was run in 2008 and a new interpretation suggested a large rollover structure at the Upper Cretaceous level and the Mbezi-1 well was drilled to test the eastern limits of the feature over 5 km east southeast of MKA-1. Gas was also found in the Ruaruke formation at a depth of about 2,030 metres.
The Bigwa concession was awarded to Maurel et Prom SA, PetroQuest International Ltd and Hollick Trading in 2004.
