Exploration started in 2014 after the state ordered Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) to start exploring. The discovery was made by a joint venture that included two US firms and the Zimbabwe Mining and Smelting Company (ZIMASCO).
Coal Bed Methane (CBM) reserves.
The mining, energy and industry ministries are in disagreement over who should take charge of the project. Gazprom has expressed interest in extraction of CBM gas in Lupane.
