Project Profile
Value: $2000 Million
Location: Ogaden Basin in eastern Ethiopia
Startup Year: 2014
Deposits:4.7 trillion cubic feet of gas and 13.6 million barrels of associated liquids,
The project will see the exploration of the Calub and Hilala fields, which are both located in the Ogaden Basin in eastern Ethiopia. The fields are estimated to contain gas reserves of approximately 113 billion cubic metres. The Calub and Hilala areas are around 1,200km southeast of Addis Ababa.
The Calub and Hilala fields in the Ogaden Basin have deposits of 4.7 trillion cubic feet of gas and 13.6 million barrels of associated liquids, both discovered in the 1970s but not yet exploited.
Poly GCL, started drilling an additional gas well at the Calub gas field in the Ogaden basin in September 2015. In November 2013, Poly GCL singed petroleum development agreement with the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines that would enable the company to develop the Calub and Hilala gas fields located 1200 km south east of the capital Addis Ababa. The company has also agreed to search for oil and gas in eight exploration blocks in the Ogaden with a total area of 117,151 sq.km.
Poly GCL plans to construct a 830 km gas pipeline all the way from the Calub and Hilala gas fields in the Ogaden basin to the Port of Djibouti and to build a gas treatment plant at the port. The company plans to produce three million tons of Liquefied Natural gas annually and mainly export it to China through the port of Djibouti. The total amount of natural gas the company plans to pump out from the two gas fields each year is 4 billion cu. meters. The total investment cost of the gas development project is estimated at 4 billion dollars. The company expects to start production in 2018.
In may 2018,Chinese independent Poly-GCL and Djibouti have agreed on plans for a cross-country pipeline to move carry gas to a floating liquefaction plant that the company aims to build to export Ethiopian gas to China.Construction will start-up by the end of 2018.
