Project Profile

Value: US$3,000 million
Location: Block 32, Angola
Water depth: 1,703m
Start-up year: 2018

Kaombo is the first hub of Block 32, a multi field, planned as a FPSO development involving two FPSO vessels designed to handle about 105,000 barrels per day of oil each and storing capacity of 300,000 bbl each. The 22 wells drilled in Block 32 have yielded 15 discoveries totaling 900 million bbl.

Vallourec: Contract to supply premium tubes and connections for the ultra-deep offshore Kaombo project in Angola, operated by TOTAL E&P Angola. As part of this contract, Vallourec will supply 27,000 tons of OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods) for wells drilled within 1,400 to 2,000 metres water depth and reaching up to 5000 metres drilling depth.

DNV GL: The marine warranty services (MWS) contract for their flagship Kaombo project. Delivered by DNV GL’s Noble Denton Marine Assurance service area, the MWS activities will focus upon the review of the design documentation and the execution of critical marine operations. The MWS team will support Kaombo project teams in assuring the project transportation and installations are conducted to recognised guidelines, standards and client internal requirements. The project sees the installation of the largest single award Subsea, Umbilical, Risers and Flowlines (SURF) contract ever to be placed. The extensive ultra deepwater development plan comprises the installation of 300 km of flowlines and 20 manifolds to connect 59 wells to the 2 VLCCs converted into turret moored Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels.

CRC–Evans Offshore: Contract to provide pipelaying services

Fugro: Contract to provide offshore survey and positioning services. Fugro will provide offshore deepwater survey and positioning services to a total of seven installation vessels and construction support vessels. The contract starts in the second half of 2016 and is scheduled to continue until early 2018. (February 2016)

Sub-contractors:

Bureau Veritas: Contract by Saipem to provide classification and certification services for the two Kaombo FPSOs offshore Angola with Bureau Veritas overseeing the conversion of the vessels and class the floaters in service, while certifying the topsides and turret assemblies

Bluewater Energy Services B.V.: Contract with Saipem SA for the engineering of two complete deep water Turret Mooring Systems and the related procurement and construction of two Turret and Swivel Systems

Schneider Electric: Contract by Saipem to design, fabricate and pre-commission two fully-integrated technical buildings—also called E-House modules—to support the deepwater Kaombo FPSO project in Angola. Located 260 km offshore Luanda. Schneider Electric’s E-House solution meets all the challenging technical specifications and standards defined by the customer in the Kaombo project. Each of the two E-House modules will be 30 m long by 20 m high, on 2 stories, and weighs approximately 1,300 tons. Design engineering and project management will be performed from Schneider Electric’s Asia-Pacific E-House Engineering Center in Australia. The construction, equipment integration and testing will be carried out at an offsite yard in Batam, Indonesia. Final integration of the FPSO will take place in Singapore before a final transfer to Angola.

Applus RTD: Contract from Heerema Marine Contractors as part of the Kaombo development offshore Angola. As part of the largest ultra-deepwater SURF (subsea, umbilicals, risers, flowlines) development, Applus RTD will provide non-destructive testing for offshore flowlines and risers, as well as testing onshore multi jointing tie-ins using its RTD Rotoscan AUT (automated ultrasonic testing) Phased Array System. The project is due to commence for Applus RTD in the first quarter of 2015, and it will start with an extensive AUT qualification program according to the specifications of Total, the operator. The Applus RTD divisions involved in the project are Applus RTD The Netherlands and Applus RTD U.S. and Applus+ Velosi. The project will take place both on- and offshore Angola.

Strainstall (part of James Fisher and Sons plc): Contract with Bluewater Energy Services (Bluewater) for the provision of its Chain Tension Monitoring System at Total’s Kaombo field. Bluewater selected Strainstall’s monitoring solution to ensure the integrity of the turret mooring systems on two FPSO vessels in the Kaombo deep water oil field.
