Discovered in 1979 and in production since 1984, the Minami-Nagaoka Gas Field is one of the largest in Japan. Most users of the natural gas are in Niigata Prefecture, due to its proximity to the Minami-Nagaoka Gas Field, followed by customers in Gunma, Saitama and Nagano prefectures.
