The Batangas to Manila Natural Gas Pipeline Project (BATMAN 1) involves the construction of natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline facilities from the province of Batangas to transport and supply natural gas to the various industries in the economic zones of Batangas, Laguna and Cavite. The length of the Batangas-Manila (BatMan-1) natural gas pipeline is 100 kilometres. In June 2008, PNOC and PNOC EC, have revived the project and immediately resumed pre-development activities such as the pipeline route and market surveys. Information and education campaigns, and coordination with local government units, tollway operators and other right of way owners were also initiated. State-owned Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC) is being considered to spearhead the US$2.1 billion Batangas-Manila (BatMan 1) natural gas pipeline project in a bid to finally jumpstart and boost the country’s natural gas industry. PNOC was planning to put up a new subsidiary, PNOC Pipeline Corp. (PNOC-PC), to undertake one of the three components of the BatMan 1 project, specifically the construction of the 105-kilometre pipeline that will run from Batangas to Manila costing as much as US$200 million. The project – a joint venture between the Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC), the Sultan International Holdings (SIH) and its local representative Abacus Consolidated Resources and Holdings and Italy-based SAIPEM Eni – is expected to bring down the cost of natural gas used by the households and transport sector.
