Project Profile

Value: US$11,000 million
Start-up Year: 2015
Capacity: 12.5 million tons/annum & 250,000 bbl/day
Location: Coega, South Africa

The project will see the construction of a proposed 360,000 barrels a day crude oil refinery. The proposed refinery, named Mthombo, will come on-stream in 2014/15. The project will supply the increasing demand for automotive fuels in South Africa, which already exceeds the local production capacity, with South Africa becoming increasingly dependent on the importation of refined products. Crude will be sourced from countries such as Venezuela and Cuba. The African crude oil producers such the gulf of Guinea, and possibly Angola and Nigeria, will be approached to supply the refinery. Production is planned for a product mix of up to 70% distillates (diesel & aviation fuel) and 30% high octane gasoline.
