Project Profile
Value: US$3,000 million
Location: Offshore Angola
Water depth: 1,350m
Start-up year: 2017 (Girassol M14)
The first field discovered on Angola\'s offshore Block 17, Girassol is located 93 miles (150 kilometres) offshore in waters measuring approximately 4,600 feet (1,402 metres) deep. The GIR-1 exploration well discovered the Girassol oil field at a true vertical depth of 8,202 feet (2,500 metres) in April 1996. The well tested at a daily production rate of 12,500 bopd at 32 degrees API. Two appraisal wells were drilled on the field by the semisub Jim Cunningham, proving the field commercially significant. Estimated recoverable reserves are 725 million barrels.
In less than six years after discovery, Girassol reached first production on Dec. 4, 2001. Within a month, the field was producing 100,000 bopd, and plateau production was reached another six weeks later at 200,000 bopd. Development drilling on the field continued into 2003. Total\'s Angolan subsidiary, Total E&P Angola, is the operator of Angolan Block 17 with 40% interest. Partners in the license include Statoil with a 23.33% interest, Esso Exploration Angola with a 20% interest and BP Exploration Angola with a 16.67% interest. There have been 15 fields discovered on the block, and there are currently four production projects ongoing on Block 17, namely Girassol, Dalia, Pazflor and CLOV.
